BIO
Robert Royhl 1949-2022
Robert Royhl spent the last forty years of his life as a painter and printmaker living in Bozeman, Montana. He is Professor Emeritus at Montana State University, where he taught painting and drawing for twenty years. Widely exhibited since the early 1970s, he has shown his work in numerous museums and galleries in Kyoto, Japan; Los Angeles, San Diego and Tucson; as well as across Montana.
Royhl's paintings are complex narratives based on extended observations of specific locations. Painted in layers, his work juxtaposes different mediums, including egg tempera, mineral pigments with glue, and oil paint.
He taught at several universities, including the Memphis College of Art and San Diego State University, as well as Montana State University. Throughout his career he was very involved in international art projects. While living in San Diego he participated in several collaborative projects with Border Art Workshop, a group of Mexican and American artists, including Guillermo Gomez-Peña.
Royhl spent two years living and working in Japan where he became deeply involved in traditional Japanese art techniques. In 2004 he spent two months experimenting with woodblock printing at the David Krut Workshop in Johannesburg, South Africa.
